On the topic of retreats, a friend recently shared scientific research she found (brain scans incl. long term studies of individuals) comparing mindfulness/meditation practice in retreat settings confer more benefits than daily practice. If you take two individuals with identical lifetime hours of meditation practice, there are more lasting changes in people who have gone on retreats (brains and behaviour). Â

Mindful Necessities West to East
Rumi says "Let the beauty of what we love be what we do." I'm counting my blessings, both having carved a life by creating contemplative jewellery and now also enjoying the opportunity to create experience for people though retreats.Â
 It took a long time for my body and mind to readjust from east to west, as it always does. Between the 10 hour time difference and the culture extremes, the practice of coupling patience and tenacity definitely came in handy.Â

The beauty of eastern cultures is that whatever is unfolding is collective. It’s not an individual matter. It’s not just one that is suffering. We were all in it together. There is tremendous healing in that realization alone.

We are by nature always in motion. From our waking hour to our return to sleep each day, each month, each year. From our birth to our death. Â No matter what we do, where we go, who we share experiences with or what they are, the motion is life. Even in the present moment that we are in. Every inhale is fresh life and every exhale becomes the past.
THE HEADS DOWN GENERATION
The Heads Down Generation generally refers to those born after the 80’s but I would say the majority of the population is affected by the lure of our devices. Look around you in public places. Everywhere, people are almost qualified in their lives by their connection to a world that lives in their phone. We are losing the ability to be connected with one another where we are. We are even losing the map to the heart of who we are.  Depression and anxiety are on the rise. We are identifying with a digital world we have no empathetic connection to. what is the spiritual solution to the violence in the world?
It’s been an wonderful month so far in Rishikesh. My aspiration here was to do as little as possible. As an over doer this is a great task and not at all easy. Beyond attending satsangs (teachings) and meditation intensives, just being present with the vastness and colours of humanity in the mountains and on the Ganges is enough to change your life.
